Founded in 2006 by Mike Appolo in Derry, New Hampshire, Appolo Vineyards has embraced sustainability from the start. Mike farms his 1.5 acres of grapes organically, without using pesticides. Notably, Appolo Vineyards holds the distinction of being New Hampshire's First Winery recognized in the Sustainable Craft Beverage Recognition Program.

Mike uses both estate-grown French-American hybrid grapes and purchased vinifera to craft expressive wines that thrive in New Hampshire's southeast cool-climate region.

Appolo Vineyards produces wines from estate grown grapes and fruit brought in from outside the state (California, New York). Mike Appolo’s estate vineyards are farmed sustainably and responsibly:

“We have been growing sustainable grapes since long before we started the winery. We have only once added chemical sprays to our grapes, but removed grapes that require it last spring. We focus on varieties that will survive with minimal chemical intervention.

Hybrid grape breeding programs are turning out some wonderful weather tolerant varieties that has already started to help define our wine region. We also focus on hand leaf removal to ensure the grapes get enough sunlight and wind.”

Mike's dedication to sustainability extends beyond the vineyard. Recognizing that traditional vinifera grapes struggle in New Hampshire's climate, he crafts his wines primarily with cold-hardy hybrid varieties. These hybrids, bred to withstand harsh winters and ripen in short summers, offer unique flavor profiles, creating exciting new possibilities for food pairings. As Mike says, "What grows together goes together." He sources additional grapes from regions where they flourish, ensuring the best possible fruit for his wines.
