A career shift at 50 led Bruce Murray from the world of New York City publishing to the fertile grounds of the Finger Lakes AVA. In 2007, he purchased a 120-acre plot on Seneca Lake, transforming former soybean and cornfields into a vineyard. The transition, as Bruce says, felt natural: "It offered a similar level of risk and challenge I craved."

Growing up near the Finger Lakes, Bruce recognized the region's unique potential for cool-climate Vitis vinifera grapes. "The climate here hits a sweet spot," he explains, "allowing these grapes to flourish and produce exceptional wines, particularly Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Cabernet Franc."

While Boundary Breaks offers various exciting wines, Riesling takes center stage. Bruce aspires to create Rieslings that rival the best from Germany and Alsace. "Historically," he says, "the world's greatest Rieslings come from regions with similar climates – Germany, Austria, France. Our wines offer a distinct expression, but they belong in that same conversation."

Seneca Lake, a mammoth glacial trough, plays a starring role at Boundary Breaks. Its vast depth moderates the regional climate, ensuring ideal ripening conditions for cool-climate grapes.

Bruce capitalizes on this unique terroir, specializing in Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Cabernet Franc. These grapes thrive in the estate's clayey, chalky soils with high lime content. The dominant Cazenovia silty clay loam, boasting 28-35% clay, is particularly well-suited for crafting complex aromatic white wines.

To maximize sunlight exposure for optimal grape development, Bruce employs Vertical Shoot Positioning and strategic leaf pulling techniques within his vineyards.

Boundary Breaks' focus lies in crafting captivating Rieslings. These wines showcase a vibrant balance of acidity and minerality, with varying levels of residual sugar to suit diverse palates. Beyond their acclaimed Rieslings, Boundary Breaks shines with bright and fruit-forward Cabernet Franc. Their repertoire is further enriched by exceptional sparkling wines and refreshing rosés.
