-
Eighteen Twenty Wines, located in Portland, Maine, specializes in crafting sophisticated wines made from locally grown rhubarb. Sourced from nearby farmers, the rhubarb is hand-fermented, bottled, and shipped at their production facility. Their wines are often compared to traditional French Rosé, Pinot Grigio, or Sauvignon Blanc, offering a unique and refreshing alternative.
Founded in 2015 by Amanda O'Brien, who was inspired by a friend’s home-brewed rhubarb wine, Eighteen Twenty Wines reflects her deep connection to Maine and her background in marketing. Amanda’s goal is to produce high-quality wines from local produce, driven by her passion for both wine and her home state.
Alex Denniston, the winery’s head winemaker, joined the team after volunteering at the winery, eventually combining his engineering background with hands-on experience to elevate the winemaking process. With no formal winemaking training, Alex’s dedication to research, trial, and collaboration with experts has expanded the winery’s offerings and contributed significantly to its growth. Together, Amanda and Alex, along with their son Emmett and dog Milo, live on Peaks Island, where they continue to nurture their business and passion for Maine’s agricultural community.
Growing up near the Finger Lakes, Bruce recognized the region's unique potential for cool-climate Vitis vinifera grapes. "The climate here hits a sweet spot," he explains, "allowing these grapes to flourish and produce exceptional wines, particularly Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Cabernet Franc."
While Boundary Breaks offers various exciting wines, Riesling takes center stage. Bruce aspires to create Rieslings that rival the best from Germany and Alsace. "Historically," he says, "the world's greatest Rieslings come from regions with similar climates – Germany, Austria, France. Our wines offer a distinct expression, but they belong in that same conversation."

Eighteen Twenty Wines in Portland, Maine, is a unique winery known for producing rhubarb-based wines rather than the traditional grape varietals. Founded by Amanda O’Brien, the winery taps into Maine's local and sustainable agriculture by sourcing rhubarb from local farms. This unconventional choice allows Eighteen Twenty to create wines with a distinct style: bright, tart, and lightly sweet, often compared to French rosé for its refreshing profile and beautiful pink hue.
