Shady Lane Cellars
-
Rooted in History:
Shady Lane Cellars boasts a rich history dating back to 1881. A.H. Petrie, a lumber industry leader, built the nearby Bingham Dock, a cornerstone for the local sawmill community. By 1900, the 100-acre estate transitioned into a thriving farm, producing peanuts, potatoes, and abundant high-quality cherries and peaches.
A New Chapter in Wine:
In 1988, a new era began when Bill Stouten and Joe O'Donnell acquired the land and planted the first grapevines. They further transformed the property in 1996, repurposing a building into a processing and storage facility. The charming chicken coop was reborn as the welcoming tasting room that opened its doors in 1999.
Evolution Continues:
Richard Fortune's daughters became the winery's owners in 2013. The same year, Kasey Wierzba, an experienced Napa Valley winemaker, joined the team. Her expertise has significantly shaped Shady Lane Cellars' current winemaking style.
-
Sustainability at the Forefront:
Shady Lane Cellars demonstrates their commitment to environmental responsibility through their Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) verification. These practices not only protect the land but also contribute to the well-being of the Great Lakes and surrounding ecosystems.
Exceeding Standards:
Shady Lane goes beyond the MAEAP program by achieving SIP (Sustainability in Practice) certification. This rigorous third-party program signifies Shady Lane's commitment to sustainable viticulture, winery operations, and winemaking practices. SIP certification ensures adherence to strict scientific standards, independent verification, and complete transparency. This dedication reflects Shady Lane's core values and their commitment to responsible winegrowing for future generations.
