Two Shepherds

  • Founded in 2010 by William Allen, a passionate Rhône enthusiast and former wine blogger, Two Shepherds began as a one-person micro-winery. In 2015, William was joined by Karen Daenen, a seasoned professional in the wine industry. Together, they transitioned the winery from William's garage to their dedicated production facility in Windsor, CA. William now focuses on day-to-day winemaking, while Karen, known as the "Chief Shepherdess," oversees various aspects crucial to the business, including foot-stomping, blending trials, marketing, accounting, and design. Two Shepherds specializes in crafting wines primarily from Rhône and other unconventional California varieties, carefully sourced from cool-climate, old vine, organic vineyards, with a commitment to minimal intervention winemaking.

  • Two Shepherds secures vineyards through long-term, block-specific leases, granting them control over farming practices such as leaf pulling, fruit removal, and irrigation. Emphasizing precision and attention to detail, all fruit is meticulously hand-harvested from organic vineyards, with the exception of one site following "Sonoma Sustainable" practices.

  • In the cellar, Two Shepherds relies on native yeast for fermentation, avoiding any additions apart from minimal sulfur usage. Fermentation and aging occur in neutral barrels, maintaining the wines' purity and character. They prefer an unfined and typically unfiltered approach, emphasizing the authentic expression of each variety, vintage, and vineyard. Their philosophy centers on crafting old-world, elegant California wines renowned for their brightness, subtlety, and texture.
